  • We received the following press release from Anderson High School:

Anderson High School Wind Ensemble is scheduled to compete in state honor band finals on Sunday, July 25, at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio. Ensemble Conductor Ryan Zysk says Anderson is one of 10 University Interscholastic League (UIL) 5A bands scheduled to participate in the highest level of concert band competition in the state.

“This is a huge honor for Anderson High School,” AISD Fine Arts Director Greg Goodman said. “The only other time Anderson advanced to this level was in 1975 when the school competed in the UIL 4A division. This honor solidifies Anderson as one of the top wind ensembles in the entire state of Texas. Congratulations to the students, parents and wonderful music directors Ryan Zysk, Corey Bergdorf, Shannon Gill, and Jesus Torres.”

“This success is unprecedented for our school, rare in our District, and for our music region,” Anderson Fine Arts Department Facilitator Richard Frazier said. “Our region includes Pflugerville and Westlake. Additionally, Anderson scored higher than ensembles representing school districts in the San Antonio, Waco and Houston areas.”

Unlike marching band competition, which are generally conducted in a stadium with hundreds of family members and friends cheering students on, state honor band finals will be adjudicated by a panel of five highly qualified judges, who will listen to a variety of recorded performances. The recordings will be presented anonymously.

The winner in San Antonio will be named the Texas Music Education Association 5A Honor Band and perform at the Texas Music Educators Association convention in February, 2011.

Contact Mr. Frazier at 414-0917 for more information regarding the Anderson High School Wind Ensemble.

If you have never tried Middle Eastern dishes, your taste buds are in for a treat. There are many fanstastic options available. A few folks from the NSCNA Social Committee will be there as well as the gracious servers at Alborz, who will be happy to help you choose something to your liking. For more information on Persian cuisine and what Alborz serves, you can read these articles on their website and peruse their menu.

The owners of Alborz have graciously offered half-price appetizers during happy hour from 5-7 pm, and a 20% discount on entrees all evening for our get-together on Wednesday.

Freshtah Kosari, the gracious wife of owner Moe Kosari, volunteered her amazing face painting services during our Independence Day celebration this year at no charge. We appreciate their involvement and support of our neighborhood and are excited to show our gratitude with our patronage.

  • Date: Tuesday, July 20
    Time: 6:30 – 8 pm
Location: Village Christian Apartments Activity Room, 7925 Rockwood Lane

Sustainable Neighborhoods of North Central Austin will have its monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 20. Here is the meeting information from their recent mailing:

Street Trees, Sidewalks on Burnet, Lamar

Burnet and N Lamar are the public face of our North Central Austin neighborhoods. They have their gritty charm, but for the most part they are ugly and unsafe for pedestrians and children. They encourage policymakers and developers to make the kinds of comments we heard during the VMU process: “Anything is better than what you have now.” That’s not true. We have to fight that kind of thinking by taking better care of our streets.

The Sustainable Neighborhoods meeting on Tuesday July 20, will look at concrete steps we can take to make both Burnet Rd and N Lamar Blvd more attractive. An obvious place to start is with street trees – to complement the sidewalks that are part of the proposed Mobility Bond Package. Where might trees be planted, what species would be appropriate, how would they be maintained?

Please, if you love trees and care about the future of our neighborhoods, attend this meeting and learn what you can do to help. 6:30 to 8:00 PM, at the Village Christian Apartments Activity Room, 7925 Rockwood Ln. http://sites.google.com/a/snaustin.org/snaustin-external-site/meeting-directions
