    Update from Laura DiCarlo:

The group that met about city-wide crime prevention and safety issues on January 23rd at North Village Library is now called CLASP (Citizen Led Austin Safety Partnership). Neighborhood leaders who focus on safety issues, run Neighborhood Watch programs, do newsletters, patrols, etc. will continue to meet on a regular basis sharing ideas and working with APD.

We will have a crime analyst speak at our next meeting, which will be February 27 from 2-4 pm at Ruiz Branch Library.

For more information about CLASP — the mission statement, pictures and informational highlights from our first meeting, and much more — go to:

  • The NSCNA general meeting schedule for the year will be as follows:

    • Tuesday, March 9, 2010
    • Tuesday, May 4, 2010
    • Tuesday, September 7, 2010
    • Tuesday, November 9, 2010

  • The Democratic and Republican primary elections in Texas take place on Tuesday, March 2. Many of us in the neighborhood are in Precinct 252, which votes at Pillow Elementary.

However, early voting starts today (Feb. 16) and runs through Friday, February 26. You can vote at any Travis County polling place for early voting, and the lines are usually significantly shorter. The early voting location nearest to our neighborhood is the Ben Hur Shriners Hall at 7811 Rockwood Lane, but polling places are located all around town. Travis County also has mobile voting locations that are set up for a day or two in various places such as hospitals, shopping areas, and senior centers.

The elections include primaries for governor, lieutenant governor, state attorney general, U.S. representative  (we are in District 10), state representative (we are in District 49), state senator (we are in District 14), state Board of Education members, and a number of other offices. Visit the Travis County Clerk Elections Division website for more information, including sample ballots.

Voter registration is closed for March 2 election. However, if you are not registered to vote, you can still register to vote in the primary runoff elections on April 13. You have until March 15 to register.

  • The Austin Marathon and Half Marathon will take place this Sunday, February 14.  The course follows a loop that will both start and finish in downtown Austin on Congress Avenue. Some streets will be partially or fully closed until the race ends at approximately 3:30 pm.

The streets near our neighborhood that will be affected include Shoal Creek, Foster Lane, Northcross Drive and Great Northern Blvd. Most of these streets will only be partially closed so the impact to our neighborhood should be minimal. However, if you plan to travel through Austin, you might want to check the race course maps.

For more information on the race, including maps and road closures, please visit the Austin Marathon site.
