Suggestions for mosquito control:
It’s mosquito time and this year they’re worse than usual, thanks to our very, very rainy May. You can help fight mosquitoes by using mosquito dunks in any standing water around your home. According to Wikipedia, mosquito dunks contain BTI, a group of bacteria that kill mosquito larvae while having almost no effect on other organisms. Lowes carries the dunks ($9.97 for a pack of 6). Each dunk lasts 30 days and is enough for 100 sq. ft. You’ll need to retreat every 30 days. (Haven’t checked Walmart but they probably do too.)
Dunks don’t work against adult mosquitoes. To eliminate mosquito breeding areas and reduce your risk of disease, follow these 4 D’s posted on the website of the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department:
• Dusk & Dawn – Whenever possible, avoid prolonged outdoor activity at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
• Dress – Wear long-sleeved, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
• DEET – Use mosquito repellent and carefully follow all label directions.
• Drain – Regularly check yards and neighborhoods for water-holding containers and empty them out. It only takes a teaspoon of water for mosquitoes to breed.
