The focus of the September 2 General Meeting was information on the City’s new single stream recycling program, mentor volunteer opportunities in AISD schools and a brief review of the Bylaws committee’s proposed changes to the Bylaws.
The first speaker was Jennifer Herber from the Solid Waste Services department. She gave an overview of the new single stream recycling program and discussed the changes to expect starting October 6th. Each household will receive a new rolling trash can specifically for recycling paper, plastics marked with a 1 through 7, glass, aluminum, etc.
It will take the City until December to delivery all the new trash cans, so don’t expect it to show up on October 6th. One big change is that the City will only pick up the recycled trash can contents every other week on the same trash day. Normal trash will continue to be picked up every week, just recycling will be every other week. She answered many questions from those in attendance.
The second speaker was Erica Hendry who is a program coordinator for Austin Partners in Education. She discussed the volunteer opportunities available at AISD schools. If you are interested in mentoring a student, go to their website at www.austinpartners.org for more information.
Finally, Dallas Maham, chair of the Bylaws committee briefly discussed the results of the Bylaws committee. Revisions to the Bylaws have been recommended and all people in attendance received a copy of the proposed changes. All other NSCNA members will receive a copy of the proposed changes in the mail shortly to review. It was announced that the Bylaws committee will hold three open house meetings over the next three weeks for anyone with questions about the proposed changes. Those dates are listed in the cover letter of the mailing. You can view the proposed changes here.
