  • The weather is beautiful and now is a great time to plant some native plants in celebration of Texas Native Plant Week, which starts on Monday. Planting native trees, shrubs and flowers can help conserve water, improve water quality and provide habitat. These native plants also attract and benefit wildlife, particularly birds and butterflies.

Here are some simple steps you can take to participate in Native Plant Week:

    • Plant a native tree in your yard or at your place of business.
    • Plant a native garden for butterflies, hummingbirds and other wildlife.
    • Attend native plant events, plant sales and educational presentations.
    • Visit demonstration gardens in your area for ideas and inspiration.

The City of Austin’s Texas Native Plant Week website has more information on local things you can do this week, including volunteering, some native plant learning opportunities, and other plant and wildlife resources.

  • The Travis County Farmers Market, which opened briefly at the old Brentwood Tavern location, has found a new home. We received the following notice from Scott Spain and Eric Snthkamp of Fresh Produce Austin.

“WE DID IT! That’s right folks we have been hard at work trying to find a new home and we decided to pull a double whammy to better serve all of our loyal customers. How about 2 locations, with our old location nestled right in the middle to watch our continued success. Ok, back to the locations.

Location 1: The Village Shopping Center on Anderson Ln. (in the courtyard)
Location 2: The Highland Village at the corner of Lamar and Airport (on the corner)

Our first day will be Saturday the 9th and the hours will be 9-2.

With the input of our following we will establish other days and times. All suggestions are welcome.

For more information contact Scott Spain or Eric Snethkamp at (512) 740-4924.”

  • National Night Out 2010 LogoDate: Tuesday, October 5, 2010
    Time: 6 – 8 pm
    Location: Around the neighborhood

National Night Out in Austin takes place on Tuesday night, October 5. The event is meant to encourage people to find ways to send the message that we are all working together to prevent crime and keep our neighborhood safe. One way to do that is to turn on your porch lights, lock your doors and spend the evening outdoors with neighbors at block parties or informal gatherings.

NSCNA has been encouraging neighbors to hold block parties on Tuesday. So far, we have had confirmation that neighbors are holding parties for residents on the blocks specified below:

    Melshire, Benbrook, Donna Gail
Helene Maham, Sherran Williams, Lois McEvoy

    Pinedale Cove
    Elizabeth Ray, Ed Seymour

    Little Laura
    Chris Copeland

    Franwood, Charlwood
    Chip Rosenthal, Juliette Kernion

    Millway
    Jim and Denise

    Stanwood, Daleview
    Mickie Bellah, Susan Boyett

If you wish to attend one of the events listed above, you should be able to find the outdoor block parties easily on Tuesday night.

If you are holding a block party and are not on this list, or if the above info is incorrect, please email us at nightout@nscna.org. We will post any corrections and additions.

Please check back Monday and Tuesday for any late updates.

National Night Out is an event involving thousands of communities around the country, which has the goals of showing that participating neighborhoods are safe places to live, strengthening neighborhood spirit and community relations with police, generating support and participation in crime efforts, and heightening crime and drug prevention awareness. National Night Out occurs in August in many northern states, but in October here in Texas when it’s a bit cooler. For more information, visit the City of Austin’s National Night Out web page.
